Josh Lanyon

I'd like to welcome desert island keeper author friend Josh Lanyon to our blog.

Josh is a noted and award winning m/m mystery AND m/m romance author. His fabtabulous books include those about BFF Adrien: Adrien English Mysteries, The Hell You Say, Death Of A Pirate King (OMG). As well as these wonderful novellas: Snowball In Hell, Danger
ous Ground, The Dark Horse, Cards on the Table, I Spy Something Bloody, and the nonfiction Man Oh Man! Writing M/M Fiction for Kinks and Ca$h.

He's got tons of stuff on the horizon as well! More JOSH More! The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks, Murder In Plein Air, Out of the Blue and the highly anticipated Mexican Heat with Laura Baumbach.

Ok. I'm tired and a little hung over so..uh..without further ado...

Welcome Josh to DIK!

Pick Your Books.

Desert Island Keepers....Um...I'm probably the last person who should answer this because I hoard books -- I have stacks and stacks of books I want urgently to get to one of these days. I even collect old books. So the idea of having to choose a handful of books...? Yikes.

But, okay, I understand the theory...a book that would be a comfort to read again and again if I was on a desert island? A book with enough blanks that I could while away hours thinking of what happened during the moments of the story that we don't see? Or just something waterproof?

So I choose...

Robinson Crusoe (Just kidding -- although it might not be a bad idea)

My Longmans, Green & Co. edition of The Charioteer
Seven Military Classic of Ancient China (maybe I'll finally get through it)
Anything by P.G. Wodehouse
Backtrack by Joseph Hansen (it's been a while since I've read it)
The Complete works of Amy Lowell

The Questions!

Favorite Hero
Ernest Shackleton

If you could be in one book/series/world which would you pick
Raymond Chandler's Phillip Marlowe series
.

How old is your inside voice
I won't tell you. I WON'T, I WON'T!!!!

Ellen Ripley from ALIEN

What hero is most like you

James Bond. Hey, I'm stranded on a desert island and I'm hallucinating!

What hero would you like to be
I SAID, ELLEN RIPLEY FROM ALIEN. (Apparently they really CAN'T hear you scream in space!)

Boxers, Briefs, boxer briefs, kilt (I say we add commando)
Fig leaf. A BIG fig leaf.

Favorite book set on a tropical island

The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne. Actually...I don't know if that's a tropical island, but I loved that book when I was twelve.

What hero is most like your significant other

Batman

What hero would you like to be your significant other
I don't want to piss Batman off, do you?

If you were stuck on a desert island what 3 things would you bring
1 - Oasis
2 - Kindle packed with books I never get time to read
3 - Plane

Favorite drink to bring to the DIK party

Italian margaritas

Hey Josh! How exciting to have you on the island. Should we be insulted that you're bringing a plane, mister? Because, can you think of anywhere more fun to be than an island full of your fans and the heroes from the smutty books they read? Are you sure you don't want to reconsider?

I can't wait to read your book! It comes out in print the 29th. FOUR days.

lisabea said...

CJ. I just need to tell you that I am listening to David Cassidy right now. No. Kidding.

Why has no one chosen I Think I Love You as their fav. love song???

Print is the way to go on this one.

Josh Lanyon said...

Hey, CJ. To tell the truth, I'm looking forward to kicking back and reading -- and listening to you gals shoot the breeze -- for a few weeks.

I have a stack of books to get through! And a LOT of drinking to do.

Josh Lanyon said...

Print is the way to go on this one.

Thanks, Sweetbea.

Actually the book went live a few weeks early -- you can order now through Amazon or B&N or...

Morning all!

Etta. So absolutely luscious, that song. It's my go to song for sexy dancing leading to snogging leading to...well probably me being kicked out of the PTA.

Anyway. Nice to see you out Josh. Looking forward to everything you're working on, re-reading everything I've already got.

Um. LB? David Cassidy? Do we need to stage a pop music intervention?

I love that song. Srsly. It screams Jake Riordan.

Ba, ba, ba, ba.
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.

I'm sleeping
And right in the middle of a good dream
Like all at once I wake up
From something that keeps knockin' at my brain.
Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head
And spring up in my bed
Screaming out the words I dread:
"I think I love you!"

This morning
I woke up with this feeling
I didn't know how to deal with
And so I just decided to myself
I'd hide it to myself and never talk about it
And didn't I go and shout it
When you walked into my room.
"I think I love you!"

I think I love you.
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for.

I think I love you.
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
I've never felt this way.

I don't know what I'm up against.
I don't know what it's all about.
I got so much to think about.

Hey, I think I love you.
So what am I so afraid of?
I'm afraid that I'm not sure of
A love there is no cure for.

I think I love you.
Isn't that what life is made of?
Though it worries me to say
I've never felt this way.

Believe me,
You really don't have to worry.
I only want to make you happy
And if you say,
"Hey, go away," I will, but I think better still
I'd better stay around and love you.
Do you think I have a case?
Let me ask you to your face:
Do you think you love me?

I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you.
Oh, I think I love you

What? I can order it now? But will it throw off your numbers? I've heard ordering early isn't helpful to the author.

LB, you are very silly this morning. I just want you to know that I HAD that album. That's right, people. I'm old!

Josh Lanyon said...

Well, I have to admit the words hold up. It's that melody. And the vision of David Cassidy's perky little face...and the fact that it was mom approved...

But I mean, far be it from me to challenge anyone's favorite love song!

You go, girl! You climb right up into that multi-colored bus and YOU GO!

Josh Lanyon said...

Morning, LL. You're up bright and early.

Hey, the PTA isn't everything. You want to get stranded on a desert isle with the PTA? I think not.

Josh Lanyon said...

I've heard ordering early isn't helpful to the author.

The showing in the first three months is crucial. Although sometimes word of mouth builds slowly and a book suddenly takes off after the publisher has written it off.

lisabea said...

Mock me if you like but I do believe it neatly captures Jake...and he'd probably shoot me for snickering and singing it in the hut all day long...but it's my nature to do so.

Ba ba ba ba ba...

So wait. I can order it now and it'll arrive..when??? YAY!

Josh Lanyon said...

So wait. I can order it now and it'll arrive..when??? YAY!

Well, I don't know when it will arrive, but it's definitely live on Amazon & B&N. WAY ahead of schedule. I think it might have something to do with that discussion in the gay mystery forum. Or maybe I just got lucky this time.

Dakota Flint said...

Hey Josh, nice to see you kickin' back and relaxin.

And, oh...my fellow angel. David Cassidy. Um...I won't judge though.

When I lived in England, due to an Amazon ordering snafu, I had a David Cassidy calendar above my desk the whole year and every time my flatmates saw it, they'd wince and wonder why they got stuck with the "off" American. So yeah, no judging.

But clearly, for the greatest love songs of all time, let's not forget Air Supply. *g*

lisabea said...

I also like Elvis. And Cher.

And Tool.

Hey DF. Nice to see you.

Lauralyn said...

Sadly, no one needed to post the lyrics they're indelibly etched on my brain. Hey... next time Josh has a release we could all wear those burgundy velvet pantsuits...

Ya know, I'm thinking I'm not going to enrich my iTunes playlist from this discussion.

I think being stuck on a desert Island with a PLANE might be just a little bit of a cop out, josh.

I don't get the whole Amazon thingie, about images and tags... but I'm sure it's only a matter of time before your books are out there like tribbles Josh. If the first three months is crucial, you probably, based on the discussions, went critical during the first three hours.

(Katiebabs, that was for you.)

Welcome to the island Josh! May I ask, what is your writing process like? Are you a pantser or a plotter? Do you conduct character interviews? What happened when you got "the call"?

Thanks!

Fig leaf? LOLOLOLOLOL.
CIARA!!!! :P

Josh! Hey there, and welcome to the island. I'm disabling your plane as we speak. We're like Hotel California...you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave! bwahahaha!!
Oh good news for you...Batman's already on the island (in Thea's hut) so you may have to fight for him.

Etta James - I love her. Her voice has such a wonderful quality to it I could listen for hours.

LB - I'm with you on the lyrics that are totally Jake...but dammit, now I have that tune stuck in my head!
Did you post good ole Stevie just for me? lol {{big hug}}

Ok - who's gonna volunteer to break into Ciara's hut, hack into her computer and delete the alien picture?? Anyone? (lubs ya Ciara!)

No indeed. How could we possibly f-f-forget AIR SUPPLY? But come on, we'll only make a little fun of you. What's your favorite Air Supply tune?

Josh Lanyon said...

We can but hope. I don't get the whole tagging thing either, actually. I think it has to do with popping up in searches.

If the first three months is crucial, you probably, based on the discussions, went critical during the first three hours.

I think the discussion is all based on the ebook. I can't imagine how anyone would get the print book that fast.

Hi Ciara. Thanks for having me!

For full length novels, I'm a plotter. For short stories and novellas, I'm a pantser. Either way, I just start writing and then jot down notes as I need to.

Character interviews? I think those are a terrific idea for new writers or if you're having trouble pinning a character's motivations down. I do keep notes on characters -- especially my series characters because it's amazing the things you forget.

The call? My first publisher was British, so it was actually an email. I think...you know, I honest to God don't remember. I know I was pleased, but beyond that...I was living by a mountain at the time and I think I took my dogs for a long hike.

Josh Lanyon said...

Hey there, Tracy! Nice to see you hiding beneath the wing of my plane -- with that screwdriver in your hand.

Yes, I guess there are much scarier places to be tra--invited.

Lisabea always picks the greatest pictures, doesn't she? Those are two of my favorites.

I love Etta James. Nice to see another fan out there.

Josh Lanyon said...

YOU Emmyjag! Lisa stole that from my photo album.

Grand Marnier and amaretto. A lot of alcohol, but very tasty. A lot of places don't know how to make them though.

Tracy said...

There are worse places to be trapped. (let's not beat around the bush!) :)

I'll have to try the italian margaritas. I love the cadillac margies (just add gran marnier) but haven't tried it with the amaretto yet. hmmm...I feel an after work margarita attack coming on!

Aw, you guys. And it's nice to see you too, LB! I've never been to DIK land before. What fun.

And Josh, I have to admit, I was kidding about Air Supply. My favorite love songs would be very different.

But don't fret, you can still make a little fun since I can answer your question: it would be a tie between "Lonely Is The Night" and "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All."

Hi Josh
Nice to have you on the island getting a tan after being cooped up indoors for months writing your 2 bestsellers.

Did you say a BIG fig leaf? Why? Is someone else going to be under it with you *g*

I do love Etta James, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke but I also love the Stones, The Who and David Bowie. Can't account for tastes :DD

I placed my order for a print copy of DOAPK from amazon the first day it was listed. Have to get your numbers up.

Just last night I ordered The Long Goodbye by Raymond Chandler because I hadn't read this particular Philip Marlowe book. Batboy recommended it.

Sorry I can't join you in a cocktail Josh but I did send you that virtual champagne.

Hi Josh,

I LOVE Etta James. Sublime. But I'm not familiar with Bolero...do you mean the classical piece?(I feel really dumb) I think there is a joke in there somewhere, I just can't see it. (Blame it on the fact that I am holding everything in trying not to squee like a rabid fangirl!)

Best sex song ever is Paula Cole's 'Feelin' Love'

(OMG! I didn't squee one little bit..ok, maybe a little.)

Hello, JW. It's nice to feel the sun on my face, the lime in my hair.

Did you say a BIG fig leaf? Why? Is someone else going to be under it with you *g*

Now that you mention it -- I may use it to take shelter when the island rains come.

I do love Etta James, Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke but I also love the Stones, The Who and David Bowie. Can't account for tastes :DD

Sam Cooke and the Stones are very popular around my house also.

I placed my order for a print copy of DOAPK from amazon the first day it was listed. Have to get your numbers up.

And I do appreciate that.

That's one of the good ones. Well, actually...its hard to go wrong with Chandler.

Sorry I can't join you in a cocktail Josh but I did send you that virtual champagne.

It was put to excellent use. Thank you.
