Yay! Here she is. :)
THE NOT SO SEXY SIDE OF HISTORY....by Delilah Marvelle
Venereal Disease is not really a subject that's usually touched upon in historical romance novels. In ONCE UPON A SCANDAL, my current release, the heroine’s father is dying from syphilis. It’s not pretty and it’s utterly heartbreaking. Because we’re dealing with romance novels, many people don’t want to see the ugly side of the reality most of these women (and men) faced. Which is why I wrote the story. My own editor squirmed and asked me to tone down all the descriptions. Needless to say, I had to do a balancing act.
Except for AIDS, every sexual disease imaginable was passed around in history. And because there was no understanding that REUSING condoms could in fact transfer disease to both sides…there was a false sense of security for men back in the day. An example of what a rake’s life was REALLY like was Casanova himself. The man bed hundreds of women, dined with the finest and the lowest, fought several duels (and lived to tell about it) and suffered from 11 venereal diseases (including gonorrhea, soft chancre, herpes, and syphilis...sexy, eh?). In the beginning, he was getting it from the women (because obviously he wasn’t born with it). Toward the end, he was giving it to the women. Despite the long list of diseases he had…believe it or not, he lived well into old age. What killed him was his inability to piss when his urethra finally closed up on him. Eck. I know. Hey, these were the REAL rakes of the day.
When it came to trying to cure these diseases, these people tried everything. Some claimed eating peacock would cure it, (I joke about this in ONCE UPON A SCANDAL) while some claimed sleeping with virgins would cure it (don’t you just want to KILL these people?). Believe it or not, the whole sleeping with virgins superstition lasted well into the 1900’s. There were actually brothels who specialized in ‘curing’. (Shaking head here…)
Though drinking mercury was the most popular form of cure, although applying mercury in a form of a salve onto the lesions was also done. Most often it was the mercury itself that ended up killing them. For chaffing and lesions linen bandages soaked in narcissus water was used. There were also people who created their own versions of ‘the cure’ (quacks) and tried to sell it and make a profit (of course it never worked).
Syphilis, depending on which region of Europe you were from went by many names. The British Called it ‘French Disease’, The French called it ‘Italian Disease’, The Russians called it ‘Polish disease’ (see a pattern here?). Everyone was freakin calling it according to their ‘enemy’ The reality was, they all had it, British, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, you name it. Because everyone was having sex.
Once a prostitute (or courtesan) contracted any detectable disease, her career was over. For who would pay any good price for tainted goods? Although sadly, that did not stop many of these women from spreading it around (or being in denial). It simply meant they would no longer be in ‘demand’ for they were ‘poxed.’
In respectable society, gentlemen gave it to their wives all the time because of their dalliances. It was a dirty, horrible secret. And once it was diagnosed, respectable society had a tendency to ‘disappear’ as quietly as they could. They ‘took in waters’, they ‘toured Europe’ and called it hundreds of other things it really wasn’t. Which is why when looking over documentation, it’s hard to dig up a lot of facts. People just didn’t want to talk about it. Think of how everyone in the 1980’s reacted to AIDS. It was amazing to see the reaction, the freaking out, the misunderstandings, and the whispers…can you imagine THEN? And yes, if you haven't already figured it out, I like to write about the not so sexy side of history...
PS. She's giving away a copy of her book, Once Upon a Scandal. Please comment for a chance to win. Contest ends Sunday 1/30/11 (pacific) at 7:00pm Thank you! And thank you, Delilah. I *heart* you, woman. :)

Personal ads back in the day

My dearest Readers,
I looooove researching how people hooked up back in the day. In particular, how finding that special someone came to be. Now although people seem to think that personal ads are something of a modern entity, it was actually quite prevalent back in the day. In honor of LORD OF PLEASURE, I thought it only fitting to resurface personal ads. For they were in their own rights hunting their form of pleasure.
Behold some of my favorite examples:
February 14, 1868, New York Herald:
"A gentleman worth $50,000 desires to marry a woman from 18 to 30 years old, who is willing to make home happy, with view to matrimony. Send photographs; rejected ones will be returned if stamp is sent."
How nice. Clearly, he wants sex first, matrimony possible but only if sex is good.
November 24, 1865, New York Herald:
"A young lady, extravagantly fond of dress, desires the acquaintance of a wealthy gentleman; no other need answer; with a view for matrimony."
It seems no matter the era, women will always pine for a rich man.
March 21, 1866, New York Herald:
"If the lady who from an omnibus smiled on a gentleman with a bunch of bananas in his hand as he crossed Wall Street, corner of Broadway, will address A, box 6, 735, Post Office, she will confer a favor."
Bananas, huh? Yeah, I'd totally remember a guy holding bananas...snort. So hot.
January 2, 1892, New York World:
"Wanted, a young lady of German parentage; must be a 36 bust and understand bookkeeping on a small scale. Apply Milbaner & Bleiweiss."
Now this here is the most straightforward employer I've ever come across. Clearly.
Glimpsing ads from days of old gives us a sense of what the reality was for these poor souls in search of the perfect mate. Curiously enough, I don't feel time have changed all that much. Us women still want handsome and rich. And men, God bless them, still want a particular bust size...That said, I urge you to drop in on my blog, A BIT O'MUSLIN, every first of every month where I delve into topics such as this focusing on sex throughout history.
Cheers and much love,

Delilah Marvelle in on the Island!
My dearest Readers,LORD OF PLEASURE is officially out. Yay! In celebration of its release, I thought it's be great to discuss some of the things men would actually learn if they attended the School of Gallantry. By the by, for those of you that don't know, the School of Gallantry was founded in 1830 in London, by Madame de Maitenon who sought to educate men in the topic of love and seduction. (Mind you, the school and all the characters in my books are fictional but hey, a woman can dream...and boy do I dream!)
Gentlemen:
*Instead of relying on giving a lady more flowers and more gifts, try to rely on giving more of yourself.
*The art of pleasure involves more than just that stick between your legs.
*As a side note to number 2, most women's delicate little pearls cannot be reached by said stick, no matter how long or how large. Which leaves a woman quite wanting. It is up to you to ensure that little pearl is properly tended to.
*Lust can be quite a terrible predicament. Learn to control it, lest it control you.
*A dildo is a fun little accessory every man should keep at his bedside. Not for himself, mind you (although if it strike your fancy...), but rather, for his lady.
*You cannot thoroughly pleasure a woman you do not know. Take the time to understand who she is. Not just what she looks like.
*Men are peacocks. Emphasis on the cocks.
*Love isn't something meant to be understood. But felt.
*No, not all men are created equal. Because some of you possess qualities that go beyond a woman's wildest dreams. You just have to learn what those qualities are.
*If you are enrolled in this school, you are already taking your first step toward pleasuring your lady. Be proud of it.
*Though earlier it was mentioned you should give more of yourself than flowers or gifts, expenseive gifts, such as jewelry, do come in handy when words simply elude you. But I do suggest you start reading the dictionary on a more frequent basis to help you build your vocabulary as words are necessary to maintaining a relationship.
*Ask your lady what it is she wants most from you. Then try not to run.
*You cannot become the Lord of Pleasure until your lady dubs you as such.
Thanks for visiting today and be sure to check out more tomorrow!

Delilah Marvelle...Day 1?
Okay, obviously, Delilah's not here. *headdesk* 99% of it is my fault since I dropped the ball. August snuck up on me and I messed up. Boo! However, I've emailed her and let her know she needs to send something NOW, so here's hoping it'll all be taken care of and you'll get to enjoy her tomorrow. She's an awesome lady and a friend, so *crossing fingers* I hope you'll enjoy her company too. :)
With that in mind, here's a little somethin' somethin' to make y'all happy until then. :)
