Butt cracks: sexy or offending?

It’s so good to be back here on the island – leaving behind the frigid winter weather and basking in the warmth of the sun and surf! I am pleased to see that DIK has rebuilt after The Unfortunate Incident last time I was here. *shudder*

I’ve been thinking about doing a post on this topic for months now, but I wasn’t sure where to go with it or what to include. It all started with a book review I read on some book blog (I don’t even recall which one at this point) several months ago for a book called “Land of Falling Stars” by Keta Diablo. The book was getting good reviews for the story, but (no pun intended) the cover was another story all together.

I read more comments from people saying the guy’s butt crack was repulsive and would even prevent them from buying the book. Really?? All that over a hotties little ol’ crack hanging out? Wow! They were adamant about a romance book cover displaying a ‘plumber’s crack’. Apparently, the boob hanging out was perfectly OK with them, but the little (and I do mean little – look at it, it’s barely noticeable in my opinion) crackage showing was enough to drive them into near hysterics. Is it really that bad? Be honest...

While I’m not particularly fond of anyone’s crackage hanging out, I have to admit that on that particular book cover, I find it sexy! Here are a few other butt cracks I find sexy on book covers…

And some admirable hunk crackage… what’s wrong with this? Do these guys offend you?
Oh! And here’s a butt crack song! Did you know there was a butt crack song? I didn’t! This has some offending crackage - no doubt about it... nothing like the sexy book covers or above male models in my opinion. Butt - I found it humorous. *grins*

So tell me your feelings on butt crack book covers? Turn you off so much you’d refuse to purchase the book? Do any of the book covers I posted stop you from buying them because of some crackage?

I had to come over when I saw what you were posting about! And I guess my personal opinion is, I'm not, like, LOVING the butt crack cover, but as long as the guy doesn't look like the men in your WTF Wednesday post, it's certainly not going to stop me from buying a book. It's not the author's fault it's there anyway! And actually, if they took either of those two black and white photos you posted and that was the whole cover of a book? I would so buy it! Um, I guess I'm just picky about my taste in...okay I'm not even going to say it, it just sounds wrong!

LOL Kendra

I get it... occasional crack is OK, but you're not a crack addict.

I have no problem with butt cracks. They are like a woman's cleavage--just a little preview of what you might be missing!
Of course, there ARE times when that preview is all you really want to see (or not see!), but those kinds of cracks would probably never achieve book cover status!

It's all in the presentation, which of couse has nothing to do with the story inside. I don't mind a little teasing along the way. What's good for the goose, etc. etc. etc. Besides I've seen more boobage than plumber's cracks over the years. Seen worse covers on really good books, and you know the old saying, "You can't judge a book by it's cover!"

Thanks for bring that to our attention Ms. M, oh the things you notice! LOL

I have to be honest, I'd never noticed before. Now I've got to go check out my covers ;)

This reminds me of a short done by The Man Show years ago for "Crack Spackle":

LOL Ms.M.!

Very unique, excellent topic!

ROFL. I think it depends on the guy's butt! I mean the nicely toned butts on the hotties pictured on romance novels and the models you have "showcased" are not a turn off for me at all! In fact, I find it adds to the sensuality.

I also think you are so right regarding the boob/butt crack issue! It's okay to display a little booty, or a six pack of abds but not a butt crack??

Great post Ms.M.!

I guess it all depends on whose crack it is! < g >

I'm with Kendra. Your "examples" would definitely get me to take a 2nd look at buying those books.

LOL Great post Ms M!

I have to say that butt cracks on book covers don't bother me. That little taste is very nice sometimes. Now the butt cracks on the video you posted? I could do without most of them. lol The song was funny though.

I buy books b/c of blurbs and excerpts and no, a butt crack would never stop me from buying a book. If anything, if the cover model has a nicely sculpted backside and it's showing a little more than normal, I'll probably be picking it up faster ;)

Love the topic!

That's too funny! Would it be bad to state that I watched that entire video and laughed my head off. :O

I'm not a huge fan of poorly done cracks. But a hint of a crack or a whole butt isn't bad as long as it's worthy of my eyes. :)

Some butt cracks can be sexy. And have their place. Some like WTF Walmart's are really gross. But these are cheeky and cute. Just like a fresh babies bottom. So I give a 2 thumbs up here. But I would like to say to most of the Hunks we see on our blogs is: Pants on the Ground Boys!!!

*ponders* Call me crazy, Ms M, butt have you considered the fact that you could just be a perve?? Just a thought. ;)

Butt cracks are cute!! But not on book covers. When I'm buying reading material, I want something a little more tasteful and mysterious. Butt crack doesn't scream "quality" to me.

Sorry, butt crack covers! Just sayin my piece.

Seanna Lea said...

Like most things it depends on the butt. Some cracks are just foul, so I normally would just say that "plumber's crack is not sexy on anyone." Of course, I think the image of plumber's crack is of an overweight guy not a hottie anyway.

I think I'd rather have crack than some chicks heaving boobs to be honest. :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I'm with Tracy, I think I like the butt crack on a romance cover - but I'll pass on the chubby butt crack plumber.

Kris, are you really just coming to that conclusion now?? *grin*

:o)

MsM <-- NOT a crack addict - yet.

I buy books for who the author is so it really doesn't matter about the cover since they don't get a choice. If authors luck out, they get a winner. A bit of sexy butt crack doesn't offend me at all:)

If anyone wants to experience some outrageous fun regarding covers, check out SBTB (Smart Bitches, Trashy Books) some time when they do cover snark.

Thanks for the great topic on "butt cracks." You're right, Kendra Leigh, I had no choice in cover like most authors. Although I really do like this cover and the butt crack doesn't bother me at all. Land of Falling Stars has one four cover awards to date, and was designed by April Martinez. She designs most of the covers for Ravenous Romance. Ms. Martinez has also won many competitions.

I was more concerned about the *pink* color because you don't see that often, and thought the cover would be conceived as a bit like the typical *bodice rippers* of old.

Any way, thanks for noting that authors have little say in choice of covers, and thanks for posting Land of Falling Stars. Hey, all promo is good promo, right?

Very nice blog. I'm following now and have linked to my blog.

Best, Keta Diablo

Oops! Forgot to mention there was a reviewer from Australia who took issue with the butt crack. She said, Aussies would never, ever allow their butt cracks to show in public.

Too bad, I rather like looking at butt cracks on men, (lol)
