kris asks which hero do you prefer?

Ladieeeeeeeees and a few gentlemen.

Welcome to the Smear-o of the Hero!

In the pretty, teeth whitening and butterflies farting corner, we have...

The Handsome Prince!

*Boo. Hiss.*

And in the dark, brooding and complicated corner, we have...

The Beast!

*RAWR!*

In all seriousness, though, is there anyone out there who actually didn't prefer the Beast in his, well, beastly form?

Cos I gotta tell you that when I posted about this a couple of weeks ago the overwhelming majority were pretty pissed at the whole love-transformation-spell thing.

So are you a Beauty or the Beast kind of romantic sap?

I'd say who I prefer, but I think it might be obvious.

Just a little. ;)

If you ever check out some of the worse villains in our reading material...they are handsome, to die for beautiful. Die being the operative word. Not all good looking hunks are badies, but...not all badies are fugly either. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And it is only skin deep. True beauty is in the heart and soul of us all.

Jessica: "True beauty is in the heart and soul of us all."

Absolutely. I'm such a firm believer in loving the person for who they are, not what they are, which is why I think this - the beast transforming from what he is - grates on me.

Thank you for your comment. :)

I like the beast too, and Belle loved him so why did he have to transform? Plus he had that great voice as Beast.

I'm not so sure about the outward appearance of the beast. I do tend to like pretty boys.

But the personality of the beast, yes please. ;) I need a little rough with my tumble.

Tracy said...

Well I love the beasts personality and would have loved for him to remain a beast but this IS a Disney movie. No beastiality for them! lol

I preferred the Beast of the Prince. But if I married him, he would have to be more princely while we snuggled in bed together. ;)

Beast!
And I wonder if he really turns into a handsome prince at all as my favourite fairytale is Ricky of the Tuft, which states that Ricky, who's an ugly man, doesn't really turn beautiful at the end, but only turns beautiful in the eyes of his bride.

"Some people assert that this was not the work of fairy enchantment, but that love alone brought about the transformation."

Couldn't that be true for Beauty and the Beast as well?

Hands down the Beast.

Beast.
I have no earthly idea why nor a good explanation...
Just cause.
So there!
lol!

I agreed on your Kris 'n' Good Books post that I liked the Beast. I like reading fantasy, but I don't really like the endings in which the hero is restored to total physical perfection. He can still be a little rough-looking as far as I'm concerned.

Beast, of course!

How about The Prince and the Beast?

Lol, I just got off a 2 week Disney cruise, so that pic makes me feel right at home.

I had this same discussion with my 11 yo daughter on Beauty and the Beast night at dinner. We both agreed we preferred the Beast.

Naida: "Plus he had that great voice as Beast."

God, didn't he just! It was deep and glorious and then suddenly wussy. :(

Miranda: "I do tend to like pretty boys."

You totally shock me. :P The Beast was growly and grumpy, who wants a boring Prince after that!

Tracy: Cut me some slack. I did say that shifted sex was icky.

Kris said...

Katebabs chook: "But if I married him, he would have to be more princely while we snuggled in bed together. ;)"

Or at the very least make sure that he was completely dry so as to avoid that wet dog smell. ;)

Sullivan McPig: ""Some people assert that this was not the work of fairy enchantment, but that love alone brought about the transformation."

Yes! At the end of my stay here I will talk about a recent read of mine that was exactly along these lines and, to me, all the more meaningful because of it.

KC: Word.

Kris said...

Elaine: "So there!"

Well, okay then! Geez. :P

Emilie: " I like reading fantasy, but I don't really like the endings in which the hero is restored to total physical perfection."

I think you will really like the book I'll be talking about at the end of my stay, Emilie, because it is exactly along these lines. If you haven't read it already that is. :)

Chelsea: I love it when everyone agrees with me! ;)

*sigh*
The beast all the way. I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who didn't like it when he turned into the prince.

Beast - One

Beauty - Zero

Why?

Because I love a scarred tortured hero - everytime..

Kris said...

Matthew: The Prince and the Beast might work a little more for me. Are you going to write it then?

Gee, that gives me an idea...

Richelle: Hey you!

"I had this same discussion with my 11 yo daughter on Beauty and the Beast night at dinner. We both agreed we preferred the Beast."

Like mother, like daughter. LOL. Here's hoping, though, that hubby and son didn't take that as a sign they could be as 'beastly' as they liked. :)

Jambrea: "I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who didn't like it when he turned into the prince."

I think with the level of support for the Beast we might be able to get Disney to remake the ending. LOL.

EH: "Because I love a scarred tortured hero - everytime.."

Apparently everyone else does too, EH. :) But, yes, give me a complex and complicated hero over pretty any day.

I'm with E.H. -- we all like complicated anti-heroes. The Beast definitely has a lot of personality!

Chris said...

Did I just hear the sound of Kris deciding to sucker Matthew into a Choose Your Own M/M Story?! ;)

The Prince and the Beast would work A LOT better for me!

Tam said...

In general I like pretty boys but in the case of the beast I liked him better. Great voice, she fell in love with him, not a cute guy and he was so adorably awkward as he tried to woo her in his big beast form, difficulty dancing and being sweet. That made it more appreciated because he really had to stretch to be a "prince" for her rather than just fall back on training.

However, just having finished Tatterdemalion (weirdest title ever even if Kassa explained it) I did feel there was no need to pretty him up. He wasn't Quasimodo for god's sake. The description I read sounded rugged yes but small children weren't running screaming as he dragged his club foot around the bell tower. So it would be nice to give "normal" folk a nod once in a while, that even the less than model-worthy can win the beautiful hero/ine and live HEA.

Kris said...

Val: "The Beast definitely has a lot of personality!"

That he does. A growly one. LOL. At least he has one though, which is kind of the point in a lot of ways.

Chris: "Did I just hear the sound of Kris deciding to sucker Matthew into a Choose Your Own M/M Story?! ;)"

Exactly who did you think was up next. ;P

Tam: "I did feel there was no need to pretty him up. He wasn't Quasimodo for god's sake."

That was exactly my response to the story, Tam, and what inspired me to write that post on my blog in the first place. It just seemed so strange to me that he would transform.

Tracy said...

I know, I just like giving you shit. lol

And I'm hands down for leaving the beast in his beastly form.

The beast for sure! But I've always liked my guys a little scruffy.

Have you seen this Kris?

I'll take this beast any day!

Kris said...

Tracy: "I know, I just like giving you shit."

*I know, you just like to talk about shifted sex.*

Stephani: Yeah, but there's scruffy and SCRUFFY... *waggles eyebrows*

Ingrid: "Call me shallow but I like pretty."

Shallow. :P

Kris said...

Lesley: I think we officially have enough people to start a club now. Thanks Lesley! :)

Kaetrin: I hadn't seen that before. It was classic! I pissed myself laughing. However, I think you might have to stand in line to take Gerard Butler. LOL.

Jessica said it better than I ever could.

I'm confused. Beauty fell in love with the Beast as he was... So why did he need to change?

As for me...I'm not sure. I think I'd like a bit of beauty mixed in with the beast :) But, it's what's on the inside that counts! That needs to be right.

Kris said...

Orannia: "Beauty fell in love with the Beast as he was... So why did he need to change?"

Exactly! What strikes me as interesting about this theme and discussion is that as much as the 'love conquers all obstacles' is a wonderful idea a lot of people now like the concept of loving the person for who and what they are even more. Of the two, it is certainly the more appealing at this moment of time. Well, to me it is at least. :)

@ Kris Na-ah - I'm a card carrying member of GB.net - in fact, I'm a SAucy Tart! (GB.net members are "tarts" - they say it's something about a play on words re tartan and the dessert but we all know the truth! and because I'm with the South Australian contingent, I'm a SAucy (geddit - SA-ucy?) tart! All that for this: I'm first. So there.

:P

PS - if you liked that one, checkout "Daveheart".

I did like the beast's personality prior transformation so I will have to vote for him.

However icksnay on the whole "bestiality" thing.. *cringe*

I always enjoy your island visits Kris... LOL

Kaetrin: "I'm a SAucy (geddit - SA-ucy?) tart!"

Oh, Dear God. *rolls eyes*

Lea: "I always enjoy your island visits Kris..."

Who else would be able to make a Disney film all about bestiality?? ;P

Kaetrin: You crow eaters can be so friggin' sensitive. ;p

Kaetrin said...

@ Kris

yeah whatever - you still have to wait for me to finish with him before you can have a turn!

Kris said...

I just want to rub his accent all over me. Besides his body will be pretty much useless after you've finished with him. :P

Kaetrin said...

Oh yeah, that accent....

...

sorry, I got a bit distracted there for a minute.

And, as for his body, well you know of what you speak - I have big plans!!

I bet.
