My Third & Final Day

Here I had all of these great ideas running through my head on how my 3rd and final day would go, only to come home from work tonight to some really, really bad news. So, I'm trying to deal with it by ignoring it...at least for the moment.

When I first found about DIK and the women who were a part of this blog, my first thought was envy. How I wanted to be a part of something so fun and unique. I'm thankful that they did allow me to join. I've met some truly wonderful people in person (Hi, Ciara) and via email. I've had some of them help me with my writing (Hi, Tracy & Sarai). I've received wonderful things in the mail that were completely and totally unexpected (Lisabea). I've had a wonderful time in all aspects of the DIK and the women here (except for one unpleasant moment...you all know what I mean, but I'm not going to talk about it here).

I've been a lover of romance ever since I read my first. And I can't even remember what age that was. 6-7? It started with the Little House on the Prairie books when Laura first set eyes on her Almonzo. It continued on when Betsy met her man in Betsy Gets Married (if you've never read the Betsy/Tacy books, I can't recommend them enough...especially if you have a little girl). Then Sweet Valley High came along and corrupted me. It wasn't too long before I was reading true bodice rippers (and I'm not being durogatory...they were!) and sinking my teeth into whatever I could get my hands on.

And then I decided to be a writer when I grew up. Ha! I'm bound and determined that 2009 is going to be my year. One of these days I'm hoping you'll see my name on a bookshelf near you. Bridget Locke. *sigh* Has a great ring to it, doesn't it?

Where is this long, rambling blog entry going? I don't know. LOL! But, I do have to say thank you to all of you out there who made me feel so welcome. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it, especially after the year I've had. It's enough to make my heart burst...in the best way possible.

And so, in thanks, I'm going to do something a little different. Tonight I stopped by Barnes and Noble and I picked up 2 things: a copy of Years by LaVyrle Spencer and something else (not going to tell you!). All you have to do is leave a comment telling me what your first romance was and I'll draw a lucky name sometime this evening (Thursday night), announcing the winner first thing Friday morning (12 AM PST) so as not to interrupt Tracy's special plans for the weekend.

Thank you again and as an aside, I don't know if any of you believe in prayer or good vibes or whatever, but I really and truly could use some right now (as referenced by above bad news). So, that would also be appreciated. Thanks & Much LOVE!!!!

~Bridget

OMG so I think my real first romance was either Fern Michaels...Captive Embrace or Captive Surrender (Lady Pirate!!)or it was Forever by Judy Blume.

My first 'adult' romance was a Mills and Boon. I can't remember much about it - not even the title - but the heroine was called Rowan and the hero called Jack and they were somehow stranded on a desert island.

Rather appropriate for here!

Awwww...you're too cute. Little House on the Prairie. Teehee.

Sorry I haven't been commenting late, RL taking its toll.

I think my first hardcore romance back in my preteen days was a bodice ripper with some forced seduction. Then I switched to good-o' Harlequin and my corruption began. ^_~

I'm not sure what my first romance was. Maybe Mills & Boon, I used to love Penny Jordan and Susan Napier. LOL

I was in a horror phase for most of my teens and came out of it and straight to romance - contemporary and historical.

I have strong memories of Johanna Lindsey, Judith McNaught and Jude Deveraux as well.

Hey Bridge - sorry to hear that you got bad news - that sucks - but I will pray. :)

I have no clue what the title was. Was I supposed to remember??? Not a chance! lol I DO remember that it was a Harlequin of some sort. I read a lot of Harlequins with women on ranches and of course sheiks (but they weren't on the ranches). Hey I was 13! lol

SVH! Now that's a memory! LOL

I think my first adult romance was Wonderlust by continually publishing the same thing Danelle Steele.

I'm glad to say I was never corrupted by Ms. Danielle Steele. I tried reading one of her books once and promptly felt like throwing up. Maybe that's just me, though. LOL!

Thanks for all the good wishes, people. I hate being stressed out with bad news, but it will hopefully not be as serious as we think it is. Very scary.

Well, my work day is about to begin. Hope you're all having a great Thursday!

My first real romance was a historical romantic suspense by Victoria Holt, Mistress of Mellyn. It was in a Reader's Digest Condensed book (remember those?) from the 60's I found in our rumpus room. I was in junior high.

I was totally hooked after that.

Thanks for hosting DIK!

Sorry for a newbie butting in, but I couldn't resist because 'my first romance' is such a vivid memory for me. I must have been about 10-ish and discovered some of mum's mills & boon. I was reading blurbs and flicking thru them when mum came up behind me, grabbed them out of my hands, replaced them with what I thought at the time was a huge tome, and said 'if you are going to read romance you can begin with the ultimate romance'. This was - of course - Jane Austen's P & P, and the rest is history!

Best wishes to you, Bridget.

Kris - wow, what a great mom. My mom told me to read Harlequins! The same woman who has a Masters of Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry! lol

Tracy, she rocks! Not sure that I've managed to convince her about m/m romance though, she's still struggling with paranormal! Very old school is the mother. *g*

LOL! Paranormals are hard to get into if they aren't your thing. :) Me? I'm a big fan of them. :)

Mmm...Anne & Gilbert. Always makes me think of that awesome miniseries done on the Public Broadcasting station, though I thought the actor who played Gilbert was almost too pretty. LOL!

Kris she does sound like she rocks. I wish my mom read for pleasure these days but she just doesn't have much time anymore. I did give her Meljean Brook's Guardian series to read (eventually) - I know she'll love it.

God, I have no idea what would qualify as my first romance... Nancy and Ned? Laura & Almanzo, maybe, that would've been 2nd grade. GWTW, sixth grade. Random harlequins, 7th & 8th. I do remember the first book my mom told me I *couldn't* read: Shanna, by Woodiwiss. I promptly checked it out from the library.

I remember reading Scruples by Judith Krantz freshman year on a band trip. Yeah, total nerd all-around but some of the "cooler" girls were pretty damned wide-eyed at a few of those scenes, LOL.

Oh, don't enter me, I'm just here for the fun -- I have a fairly complete set of Lavyrle Spencers quite handy. Too bad she stopped writing, I always liked her stuff.
