About Me featuring Linnea Sinclair

Please welcome Linnea Sinclair, well-known, award-winning, science fiction romance author! Linnea is a former news reporter and retired private detective who yearns for more adventure than 'Hold the presses!' and stacks of case files can provide. The role of starship captain was her dream long before James T ever uttered "Beam me up!" Writing stories is her way of living that dream.

Today is Linnea’s first day on the island so give her a warm welcome! She’s also been gracious enough to hold a contest! Leave a comment over the next three days and one lucky winner will receive a very cool mug!

Favorite Reading Position
Anywhere with a book

Best love song
Enrique Iglesias “Hero”, which it to me, Kel-Paten’s song to Sass. But then I also really like Fragma’s “Toca’s Miracle”, which is Rya’s song to Philip. But then there’s Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable.” And Sinatra, and Tony Bennett (especially some of the stuff he did with k.d. lang) and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” brings me to tears.

Favorite Heroine
Mary Russell Holmes (Laurie R King’s series)

If you could be in one book/series/world which would you pick?
Of mine? Probably “Games of Command” and so I could have my own telepathic furzel. Someone else’s? Probably Whedon’s “Firefly/Serenity.”

How old is your inside voice?
The same age as my outside voice, to the best of my knowledge. Fifty-mumble-mumble something. Why? Do other people have voices with different ages? (You'd be surprised, lol)

Favorite sex song
::falls off chair laughing:: Sex song? You mean, what’s music to my ears late at night? Lately it would be, “Gee honey, I know you’re really tired. Why don’t I just give you a nice massage so you can fall asleep?” Yeah, dream on.

If you could be a hero who would you be?
Bren Cameron (CJ Cherryh’s FOREIGNER series)

What heroine is most like you?
I’d tell you but then I’d have to kill you.

What heroine would you like to be?
See above

Boxers, Briefs, boxer briefs, kilt (I say we add commando)
Depends on what’s under them (amen to that!)

Favorite book set on a tropical island
None. I live in Florida most of the year. I’m overdosed on tropical.

What hero is most like your significant other?
Rynan “Mack” Makarian in “An Accidental Goddess”

What hero would you like to be your significant other?
Gabriel “Sully” Sullivan (I think quite a few ladies agree with you!)

If you were stuck on a desert island what 3 things would you bring
A Navy SEAL, a yacht and an GPS system (*cough* who needs the last two??)

Favorite drink to bring to the DIK party
Mango mojitos!

Stay tuned for day two where Linnea answers all your book-related questions!! I promise you won't be disappointed!

Hi Linnea! Thanks for signing my book at RAW in SF this year. I still have read it, but I have Gabriel's Ghost on top of the cue! I hope you enjoy you stay on DIK... maybe we'll put on the runway show for you. ;)

Yo Ana, Oh definitely, the huz is Admiral Mack or rather, much of Admiral Mack in AN ACCIDENTAL GODDESS was based on the huz. I call Rob my "boy scout"--he's this 6'4" gentle giant who's just the nicest person. Baby birdlings rest in his hand. Old people love him. Things like honor, fidelity, faith and patriotism mean a lot to him.

Don't get me wrong--he can swear like a Soprano's cast member. And he has a wicked sense of humor. But his core values...well, he HAS values. Rare these days, IMHO.

When I was "designing" Mack, I filched a lot of Rob's character for him. Mack was one of my "good boy" characters--you know how "bad boys" seem to rule romance. I wanted to see if readers could fall in love with a good boy. ;-)

Welcome to Dik!

**waving wildly from my hut o men**

Great choice of music and I have never tried a mojito. I must remedy that.

Excited you are here!

Yeah, Mack is one of my favorites of your heroes. I'm as fond of Alpha bad boy heroes as any but seems like there are too few Alpha good guy heroes around these days and Mack is a wonderful example!

After hearing about Mango Mojitos on Linnea's listserv, I went out and ordered one. I really like them! They aren't easy to find up here in Chicago but worth the hunt.

Hi Linnea! Great interview. I'm in on the mango mojitos, too!

Hi Linnea! Welcome to our island!

Loved your About me - very cool. Love mango mojitos and of course the navy seal as well! yum! :)

Mango mojitos are definitely awesome. We actually first had them at the California Pizza Kitchen--they're a chain so maybe some of you have on nearby. Now, I don't know if all the restaurants have mango mojitos--that might be a regional thing. But it's worth a try.

Thanks for all your kind comments on my characters. Yep, Jenny, alpha guys rock but they can border on stereotype. That's why I like to throw a genuinely nice guy in now and then. Mack was my first (being that Rhis--FINDERS KEEPERS--and Sully--GABRIEL'S GHOST--were both more of the untamed, naughty variety. Mack was refreshing. Not sure quite where to place Branden in GAMES OF COMMAND. He definitely could be dangerous but I don't know if he ranks as bad.

Thoughts?

Now, Theo Petrakos--my Greek-American cop in THE DOWN HOME ZOMBIE BLUES--was a nice guy but one who carried a gun and kick major patootie.

And in my Feb '09 upcoming release, HOPE'S FOLLY, Philip was a pain in the patootie who started to "sport some serious hero duds" (I think it was katie who named him thusly) in SHADES OF DARK and then in HOPE'S FOLLY is just... just... really hot. I mean, really. But again, he's the nicer variety.

I guess there's just somethingn special--to me--about a hero who, rather than thinking he won't fall in love--believes he's not worthy of doing so. It's a slight difference but it does take some of that "invincible alpha" edge off.

I'd put Branden in the good guy column, just because he did try so hard to take care of Sass.

Theo was a kick butt sweetie, too. LOL!

Can't wait to read Hope's Folly. :-)

I loved, loved, loved GAMES OF COMMAND!!! And the furzzles (sp?) made me cry, but I knew they would, since you told me at RWA you had written your cat into the book. (My baby passed away in April.) I can't wait to get my hands on your other books. Thank you!

Linnea Sinclair said...

Ciara, not only was my cat, Daq, star of the book as Tank the furzel, but he's on the original cover art as well (not the yellow cover but the blue science fiction-y looking one).

{{hugs}} on losing your furperson. We used to have 7 and are now down to 2 (although as big as Daq is, maybe he's actually 2-and-a-half cats...) ~Linnea

Having Sully as your significant other would certainly make for an interesting love life!

Linnea, all of your men are special because they are alphas with attitude, but also with emotions and the sense to let their women know how they feel. And they are okay with letting their women kick some butt! LOL

Ah, Mary Russell! Love those books. Have to thank my mother for pointing me toward them, or I might have missed them, but she knows I grew up on Sherlock

Thanks for the great interview.

DIK gals and Linnea,
Thanks for the great interview. I'm a newbie here and love all of your comments. Just wanted to add that after years of living, I still like the rascal, but if they aren't the REALLY good guy underneath, where is the nearest exit? I am out of here! :-)
