Bookworm Day 2: Heroes Cry Too

Today I wanted to discuss a topic of conversation that has come up a few times between myself and my girlfriends. Men who cry.

We've seen it in films and on television shows, even in books, heroes who cry. Men who are not afraid to show their sensitive sides.

Is this a turn off? Personally, I think not. Don't get me mistaken, I don't want a man crying at the drop of a hat, but I do think it's fine for a grown man to cry.
It shows he has feelings and is comfortable with showing them.

What do you think? Heroes Cry Too: A Turn off? Or Not?

I quite like my hero to cry as long as there's a good reason to do so. It can be powerful when a strong man is reduced to tears. One scene I always remember in particular is in Voyager by Diana Gabaldon, when Jamie and Claire are reunited and she shows him the photos of Brianna. He cries then for the lost years when he never saw her grow up, and because she will never know him as her father. That was strong, emotional stuff.

Conversely, if a hero cries all the time, then I find that a turn off, and just want them to man-up and grow a spine :).

A hero is allowed to cry, but not all the time. It's got be something important, something big.

Not a turn off. I don't like that there's a stigma attached to crying, like it's a sign of weakness. I definitely don't want a man crying all the time b/c in that case, I sort of would judge, lol. But I love it when a big bad alpha male cries b/c it usually signifies a big change in the story (or it should).

I have always thought that it takes a "real" man to cry. I think if a man can cry, he is secure in who he is. There is no shame in showing emotion. Anger seems to be an emotion men have no problem with, but laughter and tears? Those are the emotions that make me see a man as a man.

Let them cry, why wouldn't they. I mean not like me when I got PMS and cries for a silly movie ;)

jenre: good point, it is a pwerful thing when a strong man cries. I have the Diana Gabaldon books in my TBR.

chudney: yes, it does have to be something big

elaine: very true, it does take a real man to cry

blodeudd: lol...I know what you mean, I get very weepy sometimes!

Some crying can be good. There's a scene in one of my favorite movies, "Return to Me", where David Duchovny finds out his wife has died. He comes back to their house, shuts the door, sits down on the floor with their dog, and just sobs. I've seen the movie several times and every time I just bawl.
I don't like heroes who cry about everything. A strong, hurt man is kind of sexy. A whiner isn't.

abbie: Return to Me is such a great movie! I know what scene you are talking about, and it is definitely a tear jerker.
