I find that one of the things I'm continually drawn to as a writer is having my characters grow, especially in independence and casting of the things that kept them restricted in the past. I'd been worried that maybe I needed to cut back on this as part of my characters' traits, but your comment confirmed that this is a good thing. =)SmoothieGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06125828599666295592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012664417591303836.post-72466828093212419722011-10-11T19:01:38.081-07:002011-10-11T19:01:38.081-07:00Interesting question. I don't think I've ever broken down what type of character explorations I most enjoy reading about, but I guess growth is always the thing I'm looking for - the ability to learn from your mistakes and move beyond them. It seems that so many people are stuck in the same old rut - while depicting this in a book may be true to life, it's boring and I always like to hope that people will grow and change.JenMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08381388317577838604noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012664417591303836.post-50231849374244358062011-10-11T17:29:42.663-07:002011-10-11T17:29:42.663-07:00Hi LSUReader, yes on the intelligence! I think most intelligent characters are self-aware, too, but it really bugs me when I read characters who don't know themselves. Not necessarily what they want (because I think that can confusing for a lot of people), but rather that they're not introspective. This seems like it would be easier to give examples in some ways. =)SmoothieGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06125828599666295592noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012664417591303836.post-41919973013910344492011-10-11T17:26:38.258-07:002011-10-11T17:26:38.258-07:00Great answer, Johanna! =) And I'm almost done ...Great answer, Johanna! =) And I'm almost done with edits for my third book for Penguin which features a rivalry. This is a great answer. =) I know that the books that feature character arcs as well as plot arcs are always more likely to be memorable in my mind. And I agree about the humor. I like to see them grow & change with their experiences & new relationships. Humor is much appreciated, especially for a character that hadn't shown that in the early parts of the story.Dihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17621358091229477687noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012664417591303836.post-90091066087895535012011-10-11T08:38:09.408-07:002011-10-11T08:38:09.408-07:00Hi Karen! =) Glad you enjoyed the excerpt!
